Two members of the Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police force, have been hospitalized following an incident where their patrol car was deliberately struck by a vehicle bearing a Northern Ireland registration. The collision occurred on Thursday afternoon, shortly after 1:00 PM local time, along the R184 road in Tullycorbett, County Monaghan.
Authorities reported that a man, estimated to be in his 20s and believed to be a passenger in the vehicle involved in the ramming incident, has since been apprehended. The search for the driver of the car, however, remains active.
Background to the Incident
The sequence of events leading to the ramming began earlier in the day, around 11:30 AM, when plainclothes gardaí conducting a patrol in County Monaghan stopped and engaged with a man, also in his 20s. During this interaction, the individual reportedly exhibited violent behavior and assaulted one of the officers. Following the assault, the man fled the scene and disappeared into nearby fields.
Despite an immediate and ongoing search effort, the man who allegedly committed the assault was not located at that time. The focus then shifted when, approximately 90 minutes later, a garda patrol vehicle operating on the R184 was intentionally rammed by an Audi car identified as being registered in Northern Ireland.
Apprehension and Ongoing Search
The two individuals who were occupants of the Audi car, which rammed the garda vehicle, fled the scene on foot. A comprehensive search of the surrounding area was subsequently initiated, leading to the arrest of the passenger. The search is continuing for the driver of the car.
The driver is described as being in his 20s, of medium height and build. He was last seen wearing a dark grey tracksuit top and grey tracksuit bottoms. Authorities have emphasized that the search for this individual is ongoing, involving specialist units.
Injuries and Resources Deployed
Both gardaí who were in the patrol car sustained injuries necessitating medical attention. They were transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for an assessment of their injuries. The nature and severity of these injuries have not been detailed, but their transport to a hospital indicates they require evaluation.
To aid in the search for the driver and to secure the area, a significant number of resources have been mobilized. These include members of regional armed support units and the Garda Air Support Unit, indicating the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the situation.
The Garda Síochána is appealing to the public for assistance and has requested that anyone with information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of the driver contact them directly.
