Sixteen Injured in High School Shooting by Former Student in Turkey

A shooting incident at a high school in southeastern Turkey has resulted in at least 16 injuries. An ex-student opened fire at the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district.

The perpetrator, described as being in his late teens, discharged a shotgun indiscriminately before taking his own life with the weapon. Local governor Hasan Şildak confirmed the details of the attack and identified the injured.

Among those wounded were 10 students, four teachers, a cafeteria worker, and a police officer. The incident occurred around 09:30 local time, which was 06:30 GMT. The school has since been evacuated.

The injured individuals were transported to hospital facilities for immediate care. Five of them were later transferred to other medical centers for more specialized treatment.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the shooting. Governor Şildak stated that the attacker had no prior criminal record. Additionally, the school had been previously assessed as safe by law enforcement.

A witness shared an account with IHA News, describing the attacker as a young man, approximately 17 to 18 years old. The witness recounted seeing him enter the schoolyard and immediately draw a weapon, identified as a long pump-action shotgun. The shooting began swiftly.

“He immediately started shooting left and right,” the witness reported. The attacker then entered the school building, continuing to fire at anyone in his path. The situation devolved into panic with the sounds of screaming students and teachers as people scattered.

Ömer Furkan Sayar, one of the students who sustained injuries, spoke with TRT, Turkey’s state broadcaster. He indicated that the gunman entered at least two classrooms, including his own. Sayar described how he and another student immediately dropped to the ground before jumping out of a window. He noted that the attacker did not speak but simply entered and began shooting.
