Macron Urges Seriousness in Iran Conflict, Criticizing Trump’s Approach

Emmanuel Macron has called for a “serious” and consistent approach to the ongoing Iran war, a sentiment seemingly directed at U.S. President Donald Trump’s fluctuating statements regarding the conflict. Macron emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This is not a show. We are talking about war and peace and the lives of men and women.”

The French president, speaking to journalists upon his arrival in South Korea for a state visit, articulated his stance further: “When you want to be serious you don’t say every day the opposite of what you said the day before.” He suggested a need for restraint, advising, “And maybe you shouldn’t be speaking every day. You should just let things quieten down.”

Context of the Iran War and European Stance

Macron’s remarks followed questions about the U.S.-Israel war in Iran, which had then entered its second month. France, alongside other European nations, had supported certain U.S. operations in the region but had actively avoided direct involvement in the war itself.

During this period, President Trump and his administration had presented a series of mixed messages concerning the conflict. These included indications of an impending ceasefire, affirmations of U.S. victory, and declarations of continued U.S. engagement in the war.

Concerns Regarding NATO and Alliance Stability

Macron also addressed President Trump’s recent statements contemplating a withdrawal from NATO membership. He highlighted the intrinsic value of alliances like NATO, attributing their strength to “what is unspoken – meaning the trust behind them.” Macron argued that by questioning commitment to the organization, its fundamental substance was undermined.

He elaborated that partners commit through agreements and provide support when issues arise, contrasting this with “commenting on them every day to say that you will or will not respect them.” Macron expressed a sense of excessive discourse, noting, “I feel like there is too much chatter, it’s all over the place.”

Independence of French Policy

Regarding specific operations, Macron indicated France’s unwillingness to comment on actions initiated solely by the Americans and Israelis. “They then lament that they are alone in an operation they decided on alone. It’s not our operation,” he stated.

Analysis of U.S. Strikes and Nuclear Program Concerns

Macron also recalled the U.S. strikes on Iran in June 2025, which President Trump had described as having “obliterated” Iranian nuclear facilities. However, he pointed to subsequent statements from the U.S. president in February 2026, which characterized it as the “last best chance to strike at Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.” Macron observed, “I remind you that six months ago were told that everything had been destroyed and all had been sorted out.”

He contended that international observers were essential to monitor Iran’s nuclear development and that a framework was needed to prevent further enrichment. “You still have today and you’ll still have in the future people who have the know-how, hidden laboratories, etcetera. So it’s not targeted military action even lasting a few weeks which can sort out the nuclear problem for good,” Macron explained.

Trump’s Criticism of France and Personal Remarks

President Trump had adopted an offensive posture towards France, accusing it of not contributing sufficiently to the war in Iran. At a private lunch, reports indicated Trump had mimicked Macron’s presidential persona with a French accent, making comments about Brigitte Macron that included, “treats him extremely badly” and that Macron was still “recovering from the right to the jaw.” These remarks likely alluded to a 2025 video where Macron was seen being struck in the face.

Macron dismissed these comments as “neither elegant nor up to standard” and stated, “I won’t respond to them, they don’t deserve a reply.”

French Reaction to Trump’s Comments

The remarks concerning Macron’s marriage were poorly received in France, drawing criticism even from those who were typically critical of the president. Manuel Bompard of the hard-left France Unbowed party declared, “For Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner – I find that absolutely unacceptable.”

Strategic Implications of the Strait of Hormuz Closure

Tehran’s retaliation to the strikes on its territory involved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for a significant portion of global energy supplies. In the absence of an immediate resolution to this closure, Trump suggested that nations most affected should address the issue independently.

Macron expressed skepticism regarding a military operation to reopen the Strait, deeming it “unrealistic” due to the considerable time and danger involved. He explained, “It would expose anyone crossing the strait to coastal threats from the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards, who possess significant resources, as well as ballistic missiles, (and) a host of other risks.”
