Extradited Man Faces Murder Charges in 20-Year-Old Case

A man, identified as Antoin Duffy, has been brought before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, facing charges related to the murder of Denis Donaldson two decades ago. Duffy, whose address is listed as Braade, Kincasslagh, County Donegal, was extradited from Scotland. His arrest occurred upon his arrival at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnell, Dublin.

During his appearance in court on Monday, Duffy, aged 49, was formally charged with a total of six offenses. The most serious charge is the murder of Denis Donaldson. This alleged murder took place between April 3, 2006, and April 4, 2006, at a location in Cloghercor, Doochary, County Donegal.

Denis Donaldson was a figure of some prominence within Sinn Féin. His death occurred in a secluded cottage. Investigations into his murder followed the revelation that Donaldson had been collaborating with police and MI5. This collaboration reportedly spanned a period of 20 years and took place while he was active within Sinn Féin.

The court proceedings on Monday also saw Duffy being charged with an attempt to murder Liam Copeland McGinley. This incident is alleged to have occurred on November 19, 2007. In addition to these primary charges, Duffy faces further accusations concerning firearms and ammunition.

Specifically, he was charged with four counts related to gun and ammunition offenses. These included two counts of carrying a shotgun with the intent to endanger life, and two counts of possessing ammunition with the intent to endanger life. These charges cover the period from April 3-4, 2006, and also extend to November 19, 2007.

The court was presided over by judges James Faughnan, Patrick McGrath, and Sarah Berkeley. Antoin Duffy has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear again on April 13.
