French anti-terrorism prosecutors have initiated an investigation into two brothers believed to be involved in planning a “lethal and antisemitic” attack. The individuals, identified as Moroccan-Italian nationals aged 20 and 22, were apprehended last week in a vehicle in northern France.
During the arrest, law enforcement officers discovered a loaded semi-automatic weapon, a container of hydrochloric acid, and a flag associated with the Islamic State group within the car, according to statements from the prosecutors. This development occurs as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East enters its third week, leading many nations to increase their vigilance against potential terror attacks linked to the hostilities. Notably, Jewish institutions have recently been targets of attacks in the United States, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Reports indicate that the brothers, along with their parents, relocated to France in 2017, following several years spent in Italy. Anti-terrorism prosecutors released a statement detailing that the brothers, after assessing the impracticality of engaging in jihad in Syria or the Palestinian territories, had recently formulated a “terrorist plan within France.” This plan, investigators stated, included their aspiration for martyrdom.
Analysis of electronic devices seized during the investigation, combined with testimonies from relatives, has revealed a discernible radicalization process affecting both brothers over the past two years. Officials also noted a significant escalation in their commitment to jihadist ideology in the immediate days leading up to their apprehension. The statement further elaborated that the two brothers had taken concrete steps toward executing a “lethal and antisemitic” attack, though specific details regarding the alleged plot were not immediately disclosed.
Global concerns have been raised regarding the potential for increased violence against Jewish communities worldwide, particularly in light of strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran. This apprehension is underscored by recent incidents in Europe. In Amsterdam, an explosion occurred at a Jewish school on Saturday. This event followed a suspected arson attack targeting a synagogue in Rotterdam the preceding day.
Further illustrating these concerns, a gunman born in Lebanon reportedly drove a pickup truck filled with fireworks and petrol into a synagogue in the U.S. state of Michigan on Thursday. Law enforcement confirmed that the suspect died by suicide at the scene.
