An explosion has severely damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam, an incident the city’s mayor has unequivocally labelled as a “deliberate attack against the Jewish community.” The blast occurred overnight, causing notable damage to the exterior of the school located in the Buitenveldert district.
Mayor Femke Halsema confirmed that, fortunately, no individuals sustained any injuries as a result of the explosion. She characterized the act as a “cowardly act of aggression towards the Jewish community,” emphasizing Amsterdam’s commitment to being a safe haven where Jewish residents can live without fear.
This incident follows an increase in security measures already in place at Jewish public institutions. These heightened precautions were implemented after a suspected arson attack targeting a synagogue in Rotterdam, a major port city, just days prior.
Local media reports indicate that emergency services, including firefighters and police, were dispatched promptly to the school premises following the explosion. Authorities are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage that allegedly depicts an individual planting explosives at the site.
In her immediate response to the blast, Mayor Halsema acknowledged the palpable fear and frustration experienced by Jewish residents. “I understand the fear and anger of Jewish Amsterdammers,” she stated, adding that the community is facing an “unacceptable” rise in antisemitic incidents.
An official investigation into the incident is currently underway. At this stage, law enforcement has not publicly disclosed any information regarding potential motives behind the attack. The explosion occurs amidst broader global concerns about potential targeting of Jewish and American communities, following recent joint Israeli-US military actions in Iran.
