French authorities have arrested nine individuals in connection with the death of a far-right nationalist student. The investigation centers on allegations that militants from the far-left were responsible for the fatal assault.
Among those taken into custody is a parliamentary assistant employed by a deputy from the radical left France Unbowed (LFI) party. This development highlights the volatile political climate surrounding the incident.
Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old mathematics student, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Saturday. He had been severely beaten and kicked about the head by a group of masked young men in Lyon just two days prior. The attack occurred following a small demonstration by far-right feminists, whom Deranque had reportedly intended to protect.
Suspects Linked to Far-Left Militancy
The arrests align with widespread reports suggesting that those suspected of committing the murder are far-left militants. These individuals are purportedly connected to a group known as La Jeune Garde (Young Guard), which has been banned.
A particularly notable detail emerging from the detentions is the apprehension of Jacques-Elie Favrot. Until recently, Favrot served as a parliamentary assistant to an LFI deputy at the National Assembly in Paris. His alleged involvement places significant scrutiny on the party.
Political Ramifications for France Unbowed
This case exerts considerable pressure on the France Unbowed (LFI) party, its 70 Members of Parliament, and its veteran leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Mélenchon is considered a potential contender in the upcoming presidential election, making the association with such violence politically damaging.
In response to the events, Mélenchon stated on Sunday that his party had no involvement in the matter. He characterized accusations against them as libelous. “We express our consternation, but also our empathy and compassion for [Deranque’s] family and friends,” Mélenchon said. He reiterated his party’s opposition to all forms of violence, a stance he claimed they have articulated numerous times.
Details of the Attack Emerge
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, state prosecutor Thierry Dran confirmed that Deranque was assaulted by “at least six” individuals. The post-mortem examination revealed fatal damage to his skull and brain, underscoring the brutality of the attack.
