A young child in Italy is in critical condition following a heart transplant procedure that utilized an organ that sustained significant damage during transport. The incident has prompted a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the organ’s preservation and delivery.
The heart, intended for a recipient in Naples, was transported from Bolzano in December. Reports indicate the organ was inadequately housed, directly exposed to dry ice, which resulted in severe tissue deterioration. A crucial missing element was a thermometer, which would have provided alerts regarding the dangerously low temperatures the organ experienced.
According to Francesco Petruzzi, the family’s legal representative, the heart arrived exhibiting signs of “frostbite.” The donor of the organ was another young boy who had tragically drowned.
Authorities have initiated a formal inquiry into the matter, and six medical professionals are now under official investigation as a result of the incident.
Despite the organ’s compromised state, the heart transplant was performed in December. However, the child, who is just over two years old, required placement on life support systems shortly after the surgery. His current status is described by the treating hospital as “stable but critical.”
Prolonged reliance on life support carries an increasing risk of developing more severe complications affecting essential organs, including the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The duration of this dependence directly correlates with the potential for these secondary issues to manifest.
A multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from leading Italian hospitals is scheduled to convene to evaluate the child’s present condition and determine his suitability for a potential second transplant. This assessment will inform the critical decision regarding further intervention.
“I am not giving up,” stated the child’s mother, Patrizia Mercolino, in comments to Italian media. She expressed her hope that her son might still qualify for a heart from another donor.
The mother has also made a public appeal to the Pope, seeking assistance in the search for a suitable organ for her son. Her lawyer indicated that if the medical team deems another transplant unviable, the family intends to seek a third medical evaluation.
Addressing the incident, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci remarked, “We must absolutely clarify what happened. We owe it to the child, to the family, but also to all Italians.”
He further emphasized the strengths of the national healthcare system, noting its capability to manage and frequently resolve complex medical situations. Schillaci concluded by expressing confidence that citizens should maintain their faith in these services.
