A 21-year-old Austrian national, identified by authorities as Beran A, has been formally charged with terrorism-related offenses. These charges stem from an alleged plot to carry out an attack during a Taylor Swift concert scheduled to take place in Vienna in August 2024. The Vienna prosecutor’s office announced the indictment on Monday.
The suspect is accused of membership in a terrorist organization, the unlawful manufacture of explosives, and attempting to acquire weapons illegally. Furthermore, Beran A is alleged to have been involved in disseminating propaganda for the extremist group Islamic State. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
Details of the Alleged Plot
According to the indictment, Beran A received instructions online to construct a shrapnel bomb utilizing triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a volatile explosive compound. The prosecution noted that this type of shrapnel bomb is characteristic of attacks previously carried out by the Islamic State. Authorities also believe the suspect sought guidance from IS members on executing a bombing attack.
Investigators further allege that Beran A had also planned to conduct an earlier attack in Dubai in March 2024. Reports at the time indicated this was intended as part of a synchronized plot involving three simultaneous IS attacks. However, it is believed he ultimately abandoned this plan.
Arrest and Wider Context
Beran A was apprehended following an alert from the CIA. This intelligence led to the cancellation of three sold-out concerts by the American superstar Taylor Swift at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, where an estimated 195,000 attendees were expected. In total, three individuals, all teenagers at the time of the events in 2024, were arrested in connection with the plot, with Beran A considered the primary suspect.
The context of this case includes a previous sentencing in Germany. Last year, a 16-year-old Syrian national, identified as Mohamed A, received an 18-month suspended sentence from a German court for his involvement in the alleged attack plot. He was not imprisoned under juvenile criminal law.
Singer’s Reaction
Taylor Swift addressed the cancellation of her Vienna tour dates in a social media post two years prior, describing the situation as “devastating.” She expressed gratitude to the authorities, stating, “But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
Beran A has not yet provided any public comment regarding the latest developments in his case.
