Humpback Whale Stranded on German Sandbank: A Race Against Time

Efforts are ongoing to rescue a humpback whale that has become stranded off the German coast. The marine mammal was first observed on a sandbank in Lübeck Bay on Monday, prompting a significant rescue operation.

The situation, described as a race against time, has garnered considerable public attention. The mission is even being livestreamed from Timmendorfer Strand, a seaside town in Schleswig-Holstein, allowing observers to follow the developments in real-time.

The whale, estimated to be between 12 to 15 meters in length and weighing approximately 15 tons, may have become entangled in a fishing net prior to becoming stranded. Reports indicate that rope remains lodged in its mouth.

Experts suggest the whale is a young male that likely wandered into shallow waters by mistake. However, the precise circumstances leading to its stranding remain unknown.

Challenges and Expert Assessment

Despite warnings that the chances of a successful rescue are slim, the rescue teams are continuing their efforts. Stephanie Gross from the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research commented on the whale’s distress, stating, “For the whale, this is obviously a stressful situation.”

The animal has been in shallow water for three days and is not currently feeding, although Gross noted that whales can endure extended periods without food. German media reports describe challenging conditions at the shore, including an icy easterly wind.

The sheer weight of the creature and its weakened state present further obstacles. Divers have entered the water to conduct closer examinations.

Marine biologist Robert Marc Lehmann shared his observations with NDR, noting that the whale’s skin appears to be in poor condition. Nevertheless, he confirmed the animal is responsive, with both eyes open and vocalizing. “It’s reacting, it has both eyes open, it’s vocalizing, but it’s incredibly uncertain and it’s scared,” Lehmann stated.

Previous Rescue Attempts

Various methods employed to encourage the whale to move, including utilizing high tide, attempting to rotate it, and creating large waves with boats, have so far been unsuccessful, according to NDR reports.

Lehmann expressed hope that the newly dredged channel will be deep enough to facilitate the whale’s movement. Speaking to the broadcaster, he added, “I hope the channel is deep enough that material will slide down and that this will motivate the whale to swim in. And if not, then he’ll have to be given a little nudge.”
