Novo Nordisk Invests €400 Million in Irish Tablet Manufacturing for Weight-Loss Drug

Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical giant known for its weight-loss medication Wegovy, has announced a significant investment of over €400 million (£350 million) to establish tablet production capabilities at its existing facility in Athlone, County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland.

This strategic move signals an expansion beyond the currently prevalent injectable forms of the drug. While Wegovy and similar treatments have traditionally been administered via injection, the company is now focusing on developing and manufacturing oral versions to broaden accessibility and convenience for patients.

Expansion into Oral Medication

The tablet form of Oral Wegovy received approval for sale in the United States in January. Following this, broader market approvals are anticipated imminently. The Athlone plant will specifically be tasked with producing these tablets for distribution in markets outside of the U.S.

Kasper Bødker Mejlvang, Executive Vice President at Novo Nordisk, described the investment as a “historic milestone,” emphasizing the company’s “continued commitment to Ireland and our highly skilled employees in Athlone.” Construction on the new production lines has commenced and is projected to conclude by 2028.

Ireland: A Key Pharmaceutical Hub

Ireland already hosts a substantial manufacturing presence for Novo Nordisk’s primary competitor in the weight-loss drug sector. Eli Lilly, another major player, produces the active pharmaceutical ingredients for its Mounjaro and Zepbound drugs at its facility located in Kinsale, County Cork.

These crucial ingredients are then transported via air freight to the United States, positioning Eli Lilly as one of Ireland’s largest exporters. The burgeoning competition between these two pharmaceutical leaders comes at a time when Novo Nordisk has recently undertaken job reductions, citing increasing market rivalry and the eventual expiry of patents.

Mechanism of Action for Weight-Loss Drugs

Both Wegovy and Mounjaro function by suppressing appetite. They achieve this by mimicking the action of a hormone known as GLP-1. This hormone signals to the body a feeling of fullness, thereby reducing overall food intake.

Mounjaro offers an additional mechanism by influencing metabolism, which aids in the regulation of the body’s energy balance. Patients typically commence treatment with a low dosage of these medications. This initial dose is then gradually increased until a stable maintenance level is reached, tailored to individual needs.

In the United Kingdom, prescriptions for these drugs are invariably accompanied by recommendations for healthier eating patterns and structured exercise programs, reinforcing a holistic approach to weight management.
