French Teacher in Critical Condition After Knife Attack by Student

A secondary school teacher in the south-eastern region of France was critically injured on Tuesday following a knife attack perpetrated by a 14-year-old pupil. The incident occurred at the La Guicharde school.

The art teacher, aged 60, sustained three to four stab wounds to her chest. The attack reportedly took place in front of approximately 20 other students. Authorities confirmed the pupil fled the classroom immediately after the incident. He was apprehended in the schoolyard and subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

RaphaĆ«l Balland, the public prosecutor for Toulon, stated that initial investigations did not suggest any religious or political motivation behind the assault. “All we know is that there had been tensions with this teacher recently, and he was angry with her,” Balland informed reporters.

Following the attack, which happened in the early afternoon, the La Guicharde school was evacuated. Lessons for Wednesday were subsequently cancelled, according to a regional education official.

Earlier that same day, France’s Education Minister, Edouard Geffray, announced he was traveling “immediately” to the school located in Sanary-sur-Mer, a coastal town in the Var department. He conveyed his sentiments on the social platform X, stating, “My thoughts immediately go to the victim, her family, and the entire educational community, whose deep shock I share.”

Context of Student-Perpetrated Attacks in French Schools

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks carried out by students within French educational institutions in recent years. These events have raised concerns about school safety and student behavior.

In June of the previous year, a 14-year-old was charged with the murder of a teaching assistant, whom he allegedly stabbed to death. In a separate incident in April, a student initiated a knife attack in the western city of Nantes, resulting in the death of one girl and injuries to several others.

A more distant though significant event occurred in 2020 when teacher Samuel Paty was murdered. This attack, motivated by religious extremism, was carried out by a Chechen refugee outside the school where he taught in a Paris suburb.
