Frank Stronach to Stand Trial for Sexual Assault in Canada

Austro-Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach is scheduled to begin a sexual assault trial this week in Toronto. The proceedings will be decided exclusively by a judge, with no jury involved.

Stronach, 93, is the founder of Magna International, a global automotive parts manufacturer, and is recognized as one of Canada’s wealthiest individuals. He faces charges stemming from allegations of sexual assault that reportedly span nearly fifty years, involving more than a dozen historical claims.

Prosecutors have divided Stronach’s legal case into two distinct trials. The Toronto trial is slated to commence first, on a Tuesday. A subsequent trial, to be held in the nearby York Region, is anticipated in the spring.

Regarding the 12 charges in Toronto, Stronach has entered a plea of not guilty. He has consistently denied all accusations made against him. In total, prosecutors indicate he faces 18 offenses involving 13 separate complainants.

Numerous Canadian media outlets have reported on the sexual assault allegations directed at the billionaire. A 2024 investigation by CBC featured accounts from former employees who alleged that Stronach had committed rape or sexual assault. Stronach countered these accusations in an interview with the public broadcaster, stating, “My friends know me, and a lot of people which worked for me, they know who I am. That’s totally against what I stand for.” The BBC has sought comment from Stronach’s legal representative.

The Toronto case is being presided over by Superior Court Justice Anne Malloy. Justice Malloy is expected to review evidence presented by the Crown and hear testimony from the complainants during the court proceedings.

A distinctive aspect of this case is that Stronach is charged with offenses that are no longer codified in Canada’s Criminal Code. This is due to the historical nature of the allegations, with dates ranging from 1977 to 1990. Consequently, Judge Malloy must determine guilt based on the legal definitions of these charges as they existed at the time of the alleged incidents.

It is important to note that Canada has no statute of limitations for prosecuting sexual assault offenses.

Born in Austria, Stronach founded what would become Magna International in 1956. He also had a brief involvement in Austrian politics, establishing the now-defunct right-wing populist party Team Stronach in 2012.
