Russia has returned the remains of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, according to a statement from Kyiv. This marks the most recent in a series of exchanges between the two opposing nations amidst the ongoing conflict.
Moscow’s lead negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, reported that Russia received 38 bodies in a reciprocal action. Medinsky shared a photograph on the Telegram platform, purportedly documenting the exchange. The image depicted individuals clad in biohazard suits standing alongside a row of white refrigerated trucks, typically used for transporting deceased individuals.
Throughout the nearly four-year duration of the conflict, Kyiv and Moscow have facilitated the exchange of thousands of fallen soldiers’ bodies. The most recent transfer occurred following an agreement established between the parties during negotiations held in Istanbul in 2025. This specific accord stipulated the return of 12,000 soldiers’ bodies from both Moscow and Kyiv, alongside all prisoners of war who were either gravely ill, severely wounded, or under the age of 25.
The previous body exchange took place in November of the preceding year. At that time, Russia repatriated 1,000 bodies to Ukraine, while Ukraine returned 30.
No prisoner of war exchange has been conducted since October 2025. Both warring factions have levied accusations against the other, alleging deliberate delays in facilitating such transfers.
Broader Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Ongoing Hostilities
As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which commenced in February 2022, draws nearer, diplomatic endeavors aimed at brokering a peace settlement between the two countries persist. Just last week, representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States convened in the United Arab Emirates for what were described as the initial trilateral discussions since the war began.
All participants characterized the negotiations as constructive. Nevertheless, significant territorial disputes remain unresolved. A key point of contention is Russia’s demand for Ukraine to relinquish control over the 25% of the Donetsk region that it currently occupies.
Despite these ongoing diplomatic efforts, both sides continue to engage in reciprocal drone attacks. On Tuesday, at least five individuals were reported killed in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. The fatalities occurred after a Russian drone targeted a passenger train. In recent months, Russia has escalated its attacks on critical infrastructure, leading to widespread power outages and a lack of heating for many in Ukraine as temperatures plummet.
