An alleged mafia boss, sought for murder charges, has been apprehended at a lavish villa on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. The arrest concludes a pursuit that spanned over a year, according to Italian law enforcement officials.
The Carabinieri, Italy’s national gendarmerie, stated that Roberto Mazzarella, aged 48, had evaded capture in January of the previous year. At that time, authorities intended to arrest him in connection with murder allegations.
Mazzarella was taken into custody in the town of Vietri sul Mare. He is identified as a significant figure within the Camorra, a prominent organised crime syndicate operating in Naples. His status had previously placed him on Italy’s list of most dangerous fugitives.
During the operation, police reported that Mazzarella was accompanied by his wife and their two children. He did not offer any resistance to the arresting officers.
The Mazzarella clan has garnered notoriety for its extensive involvement in counterfeiting operations within Naples. This region has historically been linked to the illicit production of forged banknotes.
Naval units also played a role in the operation, with several patrol boats positioned offshore during the apprehension. The Carabinieri subsequently released video footage depicting heavily armed officers entering the villa.
In a related development from the previous month, Italian authorities arrested sixteen individuals suspected of ties to the Mazzarella clan. These detentions were based on allegations of cyber fraud.
According to reports from the Italian news agency Ansa, Mazzarella had been residing at the property under an assumed identity. Investigators also discovered three high-end watches, approximately €20,000 in cash, forged documentation, and several mobile phones within the resort premises.
