A recent Russian airstrike has resulted in significant casualties, with at least seven individuals, including children, losing their lives. Several others sustained injuries when the attack struck an apartment block in Kharkiv, Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed these figures.
Oleg Synegubov, the regional governor, reported that the missile strike, which occurred on Saturday morning, severely damaged a five-story residential building. Rescue operations are currently underway to clear debris from the affected site.
The pattern of overnight attacks extended across Ukraine, triggering air raid alerts in numerous regions. These included Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. In parallel, Poland’s air force indicated it had dispatched military jets to patrol its airspace in areas adjacent to Ukraine. This action is a standard response during large-scale Russian strikes.
Providing further details on the consequences of the attacks in Kharkiv, Governor Synegubov identified some of the victims. Among those killed were a 65-year-old woman, a 40-year-old man, and a 13-year-old girl. He later announced via Telegram that the remains of four additional individuals had been recovered, including a nine-year-old boy.
The damage extended beyond the residential building. Synegubov stated that seven apartment structures, along with power grids and an administrative building, were impacted by the strikes. President Zelensky indicated that at least ten more people, some of whom were children, had been injured in the attacks.
“People may still be trapped beneath the rubble,” Zelensky commented, emphasizing the ongoing rescue efforts. “All available services are actively working at the site to ensure their safety and recovery.”
President Zelensky also detailed the scale of the overnight assaults, reporting that Russia deployed 29 missiles and 480 drones. He asserted that these strikes primarily targeted energy infrastructure in the Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi regions. The railway system in the Zhytomyr region was also affected.
“There must be a corresponding reaction from our partners to these flagrant attacks on civilian life,” President Zelensky stated, calling for international solidarity.
In a separate incident, Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, reported that one person died and another was wounded in a Russian attack that occurred overnight in the Nikopol district. Ganzha noted on Telegram that the Russian forces had targeted this area approximately 20 times, utilizing drones, artillery, and rockets.
Further afield, a separate strike in Zaporizhzhia resulted in injuries to an infant. In Chuguiv, within the Kharkiv region, Mayor Halyna Minayeva confirmed that two individuals sustained injuries following a drone attack on a house situated in the city’s central area.
