Five Injured in Swiss Train Derailment Amid Heavy Snow

Five individuals sustained injuries following a train derailment in southern Switzerland. Authorities suspect an avalanche may have been the cause of the incident.

The derailment occurred close to the village of Goppenstein around 7:00 AM local time, precisely when the area was under an avalanche warning. Officials confirmed the event’s timing.

All 29 individuals aboard the train have been rescued. One of the injured passengers required hospitalization, according to police statements.

Switzerland has recently contended with substantial rainfall and snowfall. The Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research has issued high avalanche risk warnings across the Alps, indicating a significant danger.

Preliminary investigations suggest that an avalanche might have impacted the tracks just before the train’s passage. This information was provided by the police, who also noted the initiation of an inquiry by the public prosecutor’s office.

“Five individuals sustained injuries, with one requiring transport to a hospital,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

The train, a regional commuter service, was en route from Spiez to Brig when it went off the tracks.

Goppenstein serves as a critical junction for both road and rail transportation, situated at the egress of the Lotschberg rail tunnel. Reports indicate the derailment took place as the train was exiting this tunnel.

The region was under a level four avalanche warning, the second-highest on a scale of five, signaling considerable risk.

The severe snowfall also necessitated the evacuation of 50 people from Orsieres, a village located near the French border.

Authorities have issued advisories urging skiers to remain on designated slopes. Additionally, individuals planning to traverse the mountainous terrain are advised to consult avalanche bulletins before commencing their journeys.

This incident follows a previous event last month where a German national died and four others were injured in an avalanche while cross-country skiing in the Swiss Alps.
