A man accused of murdering his father in a luxury Irish hotel has been found not guilty of the charge, with the court citing reason of insanity.
Henry McGowan, a 31-year-old resident of Clinton Street in Brooklyn, New York, was responsible for the death of his 66-year-old father, John McGowan. The incident occurred at Ballyfin Demesne on November 12, 2024.
During legal proceedings, two consultant psychiatrists, representing both the defense and prosecution, concurred. They testified that Henry McGowan was experiencing schizoaffective disorder at the time of the fatal event.
McGowan had reportedly suffered a relapse of his mental health while traveling through Europe. His father, John McGowan, had journeyed from the United States to Ireland with the intention of bringing his son back home.
According to reports from Irish broadcaster RTÉ, Henry McGowan arrived in Dublin on November 11. He recounted an event where he allegedly ran from Dublin Airport to the city center.
The following day, he visited the Mater Hospital, where he was prescribed medication for his condition.
His family had grown increasingly worried about his well-being. Consequently, his father made the trip from the US, undertaking what was described as a compassionate mission to escort him back.
Tragically, within hours of their reunion, John McGowan was killed by his son, Henry, who was in the midst of a psychotic episode.
The legal proceedings are scheduled to continue on February 20. On that date, the judge will review evidence pertaining to a proposed treatment program for Henry McGowan.
