Six Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicides in Bulgarian Mountains

Authorities have reported the discovery of six individuals deceased in a series of events investigators are categorizing as probable murder-suicides in a western Bulgarian mountain range. The grim findings emerged over a period of days, painting a complex and unsettling picture.

The initial discovery involved three bodies, including a 15-year-old, found within a van. This vehicle was located in a secluded area of the Stara Planina mountain range on a Sunday. Investigators quickly established a link between these individuals and three other deceased persons found six days earlier near a structure that had been completely burned down.

Surveillance footage captured moments at the hut. Officers noted that the CCTV images clearly showed the initial group of three bidding farewell to the individuals who would later be found by the burned ruin. Those who remained at the site were subsequently filmed igniting the structure.

Borislav Sarafov, Bulgaria’s acting prosecutor general, remarked on the case’s complexity, suggesting it contained “more shocking details” than the renowned television drama “Twin Peaks,” a series focused on a murder investigation in a small American town.

Theories circulating among prosecutors point towards the deaths being either murder-suicides or individual suicides. This speculation has fueled intense public discussion within the country and drawn criticism regarding the ongoing investigation. Bulgaria’s national police chief characterized the incident as an “unprecedented crime,” stating it was unlike anything previously encountered in the nation’s history.

The first three men, identified as being 45, 49, and 51 years old, were discovered on February 2. They were located near a hut that had been consumed by fire, according to reports citing the Bulgarian interior ministry. All three bore gunshot wounds.

Natalia Nikolova, representing the Appeal Prosecutor’s Office in Sofia, informed reporters on Monday that there were “no signs of a struggle” or any other forms of external trauma on the bodies. Forensic analysis later determined that the shots had been discharged at close range.

Details from Reuters indicate that two handguns and a rifle were recovered at the scene. This location was near the Petrohan mountain pass, situated approximately one hour away from the capital city, Sofia.

Six days after the initial discovery, law enforcement located two men and the 15-year-old boy. They were found deceased inside a parked camper van in proximity to Mount Okolchista.

“These individuals are connected to the Petrohan case,” stated national police chief Zahari Vaskov to assembled reporters. He elaborated that they had sustained wounds from gunshots, which appeared to have been fired from within the confines of the vehicle. Subsequent autopsy results, according to prosecutors, suggested a scenario involving two murders and one suicide.

Officials revealed that a majority of the individuals involved were members of a non-governmental organization dedicated to nature protection.
