Italian Railways Targeted by Suspected Sabotage Amid Winter Olympics Opening

Severe disruptions have struck northern Italy’s railway network due to suspected attacks, impacting travel as thousands convened for the commencement of the Winter Olympic Games. Authorities have indicated that three distinct incidents involving damage to rail lines are potentially linked to the ongoing events.

One incident involved a fire that affected rail infrastructure situated between Bologna and Venice. This event resulted in travel delays extending up to two and a half hours. Subsequent investigations by police uncovered severed cables and an explosive device at nearby locations.

The Ministry of Transport has officially characterized these occurrences as an act of “serious sabotage.” Officials drew a parallel to acts of vandalism that took place during the 2024 Paris Olympics, suggesting a pattern of disruption coinciding with major sporting events.

Further details revealed that a track switch near Pesaro, located on the Adriatic coast, was deliberately set ablaze. Several hours later, in the vicinity of Bologna, authorities discovered severed electrical cables. A rudimentary explosive device was also found placed near a railway track in the same area.

Bologna’s Critical Rail Hub Affected

Bologna’s central railway station serves as a vital transit point, connecting major cities across Italy. Its strategic position as a hub for north-south and east-west rail lines underscores the potential impact of any disruption to its operations.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini commented on the situation, stating, “These actions of unprecedented seriousness do not in any way tarnish Italy’s image in the world, an image that the Games will make even more compelling and positive.”

Earlier, a spokesperson for the police force confirmed that an investigation was underway and that no group or individual had yet claimed responsibility for the incidents. Salvini drew comparisons to events at the Paris Summer Olympics, where similar acts of sabotage targeted France’s high-speed rail network.

“There are similarities in action and timing to the French incident,” Salvini informed AFP, highlighting the perceived connection between the events.

Service Restoration and Olympic Context

Bologna’s high-speed, state-owned railway experienced temporary closures following the incidents. However, by Saturday afternoon, rail traffic was reportedly returning to normal operational levels.

The opening ceremony for the Winter Olympic Games was held on Friday evening. The ceremony took place across multiple locations, including Milan and Cortina in the northeastern part of Italy. Both Milan and Cortina are accessible by train from Venice.

The sporting events themselves are dispersed across a vast area of northern Italy. Venues are situated throughout the Alps and the Dolomite mountains, covering hundreds of miles and requiring extensive travel for athletes and spectators alike.
