Described by government officials as an “extreme climatic event,” the storm led to the closure of educational institutions, rendered numerous buildings unsafe, and severely impeded transportation networks across the country.
Impact in Coastal and Urban Areas
In the coastal city of Figueira da Foz, the ferocity of the storm was evident as a Ferris wheel was overturned. A section of a building’s roof was torn away, and several vehicles sustained damage from the debris.
Portugal has experienced a series of adverse weather events in recent days. This includes a previous storm over the weekend that tragically claimed one life when a man’s car was swept away by floodwaters.
Environmental and Infrastructural Consequences
Authorities reported that over 3,000 weather-related incidents occurred nationwide, a consequence of heavy rainfall coupled with wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. Reports indicated that several individuals were injured by falling trees or airborne debris.
The most intense winds were registered at the Monte Real air base in Leiria, where gusts of 178 kilometers per hour were recorded before the measuring equipment failed. Officials believe this location was the storm’s initial point of entry onto mainland Portugal.
Widespread Power Outages and Fatalities
Electricity distributor E-Redes confirmed that more than 850,000 households experienced power outages on Wednesday. The national civil protection agency (ANEPC) detailed that three deaths occurred within the central district of Leiria, an area particularly hard-hit by the storm.
Eyewitness accounts and official reports paint a grim picture. In Leiria, one person was struck by a detached metal sheet, and another was found trapped within the structural damage of a home. Local media sources also reported a fatality in Vila Franca de Xira when a tree fell onto a vehicle. An additional death was reported in the Marinha Grande region.
Transportation and Marine Warnings
The storm critically disrupted travel throughout Portugal. Major roadways, including the primary highway connecting Lisbon to the northern regions, were rendered impassable due to blocked debris. Railway services also faced significant interruptions.
On Wednesday, ten coastal zones were placed under a red weather warning, reflecting the dangerous sea conditions. Forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicted wave heights potentially reaching up to 14 meters (approximately 45 feet, 11 inches).
Official Response and Calls for Emergency Measures
The Public Security Police (PSP) issued advisories urging residents in Coimbra and Leiria to remain indoors. The Secretary of State for Civil Protection confirmed that the nation was operating under a maximum alert status.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegro extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. He stated that damage assessments were currently underway and that all necessary measures would be implemented.
Leiria’s mayor, Goncalo Lopes, appealed to the government to officially declare a state of emergency. He described the situation as having “public spaces turned upside down” and emphasized the substantial recovery effort required in the coming months. Lopes likened the scale of destruction to that caused by a bomb, noting the massive devastation within the city.
